Eggs and 'tetchup

Eggs & 'tetchup
I once had the best wife in the universe, who just happened to be one studly hunk of a man. An unbiased opinion, that, I swear. Mitch was of the "Wash, Clean, Cook? YES!" mentality that I still cannot quite understand. Happy to appreciate these skills, in my confusion, make no mistake, I'm very grateful! Especially considering Wash, Clean, Cook were happily joined by Play and Change Diapers ♥
When he fell undeniably ill, mid-October, there was no denying a shift of responsibilities was inevitable. I wasn't ready for imminent, inevitable was fine.
Mitch's mother came to visit for Thanksgiving. I prepared by asking, pleading, begging, admonishing and threatening Mitch to remain still and docile, for a few weeks, to allow his bruises to heal.  We knew they came from his Lumbering About Adventures, including walls, doorways and floors; she did not. Already, he was a scary sight post-stroke, I'll admit, and I was there every day to watch the rapidlyslow decline of his body. She was in for the shock of her life, I wanted to soften it as much as I could, with whatever energy I could muster.  (FYI - he didn't listen)
I'm honored that food was her only issue with his care. Mostly I remember she made him oatmeal, his childhood favorite, like when he was 8.  Mitch really liked it with steamed milk and thank the heavens Mitch's mother was there to provide this peek at someone who'd been a stranger for almost 25 years of my life and my husband for merely 5. These peeks were numbered, sacred and running out at alarming speed.  I make oatmeal with water, he made it with water, she found comfort in providing the milk ♥
Oh look! Eggs & 'tetchup
On his last day with his mom in town, I made breakfast. And documented it.
My kids liked Eggs & 'tetchup because their dad made it for them whenever they asked. They liked Cheese Toast because Daddy told them the very best cheese comes wrapped in individual slices & tastes great slapped on dry toast.
It was two days later when I offered the kids breakfast and they ran to Mitch's dresser. Puzzled, I followed and observed as they opened his sock drawer, I helped them rifle around until we found the (unbeknownst to me) mega-stash of Everlasting Gobstoppers.  Apparently, the breakfast of other champions named Jenner. Daily part of the lounging-in-bed-before-actually-getting-up routine. Probably followed by a trip to the kitchen with real food, before the family shower at 11:30 am.
A part of the day that was theirs alone with Dad; with routines and rhythms and scents and sounds so different than my own; different even than when I am present. I was suddenly extra sad for them, for this intimacy they'd lost and perhaps never remember. And I stopped. They'd been given the gift of a father, for the briefest of moments, who was their playmate, their champion, their sun & moon. Perhaps not to be a memory for the brain at all, but a memory designed for one's heart and soul.
And that memory is moving towards making it all worthwhile ♥

Thematic Photographic - Yellow Week

I spent a week with no mind, time, nor wherewithal to blog.
I still had my camera and a chance to check Carmi's theme.
I played along in my heart ♥

Hayden lifts a car in front of the Washington Pavilion of Arts & Science;
formerly Washington Senior High School (Diana Lambert, Class of 1986);
formerly Sioux Falls High School.
One of our favorite places on the planet;
in all it's layers of generational memories.

I fortify myself while waiting for Toys R Us to open, near Spokane, WA.
While wearing the hoodie Grampa Bob picked out for Hayden on our recent trip to LA ♥
Hayden finds the Wall o'Nerf. He was appropriately reverent.

Baby Breann celebrates two years of human existence at Sertoma Park.
The bubbles were a big hit, especially after Hayden joined in the chasing!
Baby Xander was so happy to finally be called by his real name! :::wink, wink:::
He enjoyed Big Jim's Green Plastic Spork/Knifula set as much as we have!

Fawick Park has has beautiful flowers this week.
I took pictures of most of them.
And of David.
And his package.
Oh, donchu worry, the commentary shall be hilarious ♥

Thematic Photographic - Reflective 6

Grampa Lee & Hannah LeaHayden and I finally got to meet Gramma Linda, Grampa Lee Jenner's widow, in Winston-Salem a couple of years ago. When Lee died, he told Linda he didn't want her to sprinkle his ashes. We left some Hannah ashes and the "Life is Good" - by Hayden - plaque, to inspire him onto his next adventure. Once Linda's earthly responsibilities are fulfilled, her son Jay and I will have the honor of releasing them both ♥ Yes, that's Lee on the right; add a little bronzer and that's exactly what Mitch woulda looked like at that age.
On this same trip, we discovered Hayden's very own reflection of his never-met-in-the-flesh grampa: They're both painters!

...a girl named Hannah Lea

12.5 years ago, early this morning, Hannah was born.
3 years ago yesterday, Hannah said to me, "Don't worry about me, mom, I'm a rock."
3 years ago today, she slept through her final half-birthday, while we sang. Still not ready to let go.
So today, as I cry, I'm listening to the music over at Hannah's Ashes. I know Puff the Magic Dragon plays with a girl named Hannah Lea. Bob Marley doesn't have to sing "Don't Worry" in heaven, because they already know; that song's for the rest of us ♥ I believe in Yesterday & like Stevie Nicks, I'm counting on being called home just as soon as that place is ready for me. All the while, You Belong to Me. And I know that this time around I got to be Hannah's mom and that means something special and sacred; I can be anyone, even diana-healed ♥
I think of the pictures I'd have, had I hired a photographer for death, as one does for a birth. I'd have a portrait of the sweet nurse who celebrates a birthday-and-a-half today, for my sweet girl. I'd be able to show you the sun through the windows, shining on the heads of those who stood vigil, singing to an unconscious, well-loved Hannah. You'd see the solace we sought with one another in the waiting room we commandeered. There'd be awe on the faces of the medical professionals, as they witnessed their first peaceful transition; there'd be an underlying love for a patient they'd been honored to know and to serve, if only for a few hours. Hayden's sleeping form would belie the overwhelm he'd lived in for the past many weeks; there'd be peace in his deep rest. I bet you'd find peace there, in the rest of us, too. I still find great peace in the places sleep can take me.
Today, however, I am awake. I am feeling. Because I'm honored to have the human experience of emotions and attachments. Today I am attached to a dream. Plenty of time tomorrow to reattach to reality.

It just came to me...

I was responding to a post at AlwaysLearing & suddenly it became a vision statement about Mitch's mother... It deserves more exploration than the list is intended for, and perfectly in line with what this blog is for...

I guess I'm also looking for ways to attempt to repair my relationship with her as well. I've never had a good relationship with her personally because I march to a different drummer (her words) and I've been unpredictable in that sense.
__,_._,___

I'm at this kind of precipice-as-it-were with my MIL. I want to have a good relationship with her, especially as a gateway to my dead husband's family for my son. She doesn't get *me* let alone any feel-good, weird schtuff I'm doing to her only grandkids. I'm coming round to realize she still needs *us* - as a gateway to her dead son's family. It's a pretty important role, I'm only coming to realize as Hayden gets older and older before my eyes, to be grandmother to Mitch's kid. She deserves a chance to honor Hayden in her own way, as the kid he is, on whatever terms the two of them come up with.
And well, I sure thought her son was cool enough to marry and replicate, twice even!, so ya'd think I'd find something or other I'd like about his mother, too. I happen to think that Mitch picking me for the same things gives me a pretty dang good standing in her mind, too.
We've dealt with our years of pain in very different ways. Just as we once came together over a love of Mitch, I believe we can come together over a love of Hayden. We don't need to be the same, or even like one another's differences, to love the same person. She is awfully nice; misdirected and still awfully nice.
The unschooling thing, should become less and less of an issue as their topics of conversation mature and the focus of the relating becomes human to human instead of child to old person. Our way works for us and it's apparent. Hayden's easy to talk to, interesting and intelligent. His grandmother can figure that one out herself. Given the proper chance and channels.
It's up to me, I suppose, to get that set up. It's obvious I can hop in a car and get to LA without much problem ;) Her house is even an hour and a half closer than Spaceland & James.
