This name keeps foating to the forefront of my brain... I know Black Flag, from my wanna-be punk 80's days... I recorded the Punk documentary on IFC, so I know the man has an incredible perspective on life and is willing to share with the world. John showed me the lyrics to Illumination last weekend:
I walked green miles of jungle
I walked through yellow miles of pain
I crossed starvation's desert
Watched dead rivers swell with rain
The song of insects filled the air
Nights and cities of despair
A killer sun sets sunday wear
And all the roads from here to there
Yeah
I sailed the sea of desolation
Dropped my anchor there
Plumbed the depths of isolation
Walked its length and was not scared
Went from end to end to end
And from there I went again
The road that only this one knows
Off to nowhere
Here I go
Illumination comes so hard
Makes me see but it leaves its scars
At times I wish that I didn't know what I know now
Thought and thought until I lost my mind
Looked and looked until I went near blind
The path is fair but so unkind
Illumination
(solo)
At night the highway's diesel roar
Speaks to me and tells me more
Than any book I've ever read
Or anything you've ever said
Through silent eyes inside
I watch myself and worlds collide
The seasons burn and crack my skin
I stay outside and live within
Illumination comes so hard
Makes me see but it leaves its scars
At times I wish that I didn't know what I know now
Thought and thought until I lost my mind
Looked and looked until I went near blind
The path is fair but so unkind
Illumination
Illumination
Illumination
Illumination
Illumination
The bold words had me bawling...
I recorded an episode of his IFC show. Honestly, he's hard to look at, I can tell he's not totally comfortable with the cameras... but he did ask the kind of questions I would ask, his curiosity for life is right in line with mine.
I just saw the episode where an Athiest mama stays with an Evangelical Christian family. She held herself well and should be very proud of herself after a month in that kind of environment. She was eloquent and self-assured; more than one person was surprised to find her a moral and ethical human being (but how without a bibilical basis?? was asked often). Two really screwed up perceptions of athiests: (1) All athiests believe Darwin without question. Doncha know, athiests are the only ones who don't know it's a theory. I'm gonna ask my friend Sandra and her kids, my token athiests; I'd bet they know it's a theory and I'd bet they don't buy it. (2) my favorite comment from Christian Daddy, "It's not fair she's raising those kids as athiests, without allowing them the choice of being Christian." So my question to you, Morally Superior Parent: Are you allowing your children the choice of being athiests?

On another note... 30 Days is back!!I just saw the episode where an Athiest mama stays with an Evangelical Christian family. I'd consider myself an agnostic, and would say I believe in things for which there is scientific basis, evolution included. There is just too much physical evidence of it. Is that belief the basis for my life, like the bible, etc., is for christians? No. I'm not sure why it is such a black and white issue, why some christians are so hesitant to say (or believe) something along the lines of "Well, I believe in god, but I also am capable of using the brain god gave me. Why can't we say that god created the ball of matter that eventually became the world, and acknowledge that while the people who wrote the bible had wisdom, it was a less enlightened time, and I will take from it all the goodness that I can, and refute that which intellectually makes no sense." That would make a lot more sense to me.
I like your comment about how the xian dad wasn't allowing his children the choice of being athiests. Definite double standard. He was like a brick wall a lot of the time.
Thanks for your comment!
I need to use the term theist more often when describing myself; there is a god (Radiant Infinite IS to quote Richard Bach) and no ONE and every ONE owns the concept (divine dichotomy).
I absolutely believe in evolution, I know that Darwin was on the right track, but he doesn't answer all the questions (hence the "missing link"). Plus, I think modern evolution is being stunted by the science I so want to believe in (quality vs quantity of life -- especially in the very young and very old) and by our human desperation to NOT die (signs on RR tracks "do not stop on tracks").
I'm evolving and proud.
My favorite comic: two girls at a bar, scoping the scene, one says, "Is evolution still happening? or is this it?" :)
